2010s. 2010s? 2010s! Epic highs and epic lows, La La land or Moonlight - who knows?
What, politically, was happening each of these years, and how did that impact who took the trophy home?
2019. Green Book is the epitome of what Academy voters gag for. Essentially just a race-swapped Driving Miss Daisy, Green book's win occured around a time of rising racial tensions with Brexit happening. Frankly, film's like this are just a go-to for Academy voters when they feel they've done enough - espcially with Moonlight winning years prior.
2018, Moonlight. What more can be said about Moonlight's historic win? Coming off of the Black Lives Matter movement in the States, Moonlight brilliantly encapsulated the time Academy voters were living in. As well as also just being an incredible film.
Being politically rich already, Spotlight's win is nothing surprising considering how well the film portrayed the anxieties of the situation. For what was such a worldwide issue (reaching New Zealand as well), it's no surprise this took the trophy.
Argo in 2013. A film that tackles the Iranian revolution at its boiling point with an American saving other Americans. Amidst the "Middle East conflict", Academy voters cannot resist giving the trophy to something that tackles this seemingly out-of-nowhere conflict - sarcasm. Also just a good movie!
Hurtlocker in 2009. The Middle East conflict with Americans as people who didn't like what they were doing over there - they had no choice :(. A historic win for female directors and women directors who want to make mid movies.
