The wolves have a special place in the culture of these tribes, featuring in their oral literature and folklore. They represent a strong bond with nature and are depicted as a symbol of resilience and strength. Well before any scientific interest arose, the native tribes were well aware of their travels between islands and dependency on marine life.

These animals started being scientifically recognized by Western researchers at the end of the 20th century and in the first part of the 21st century because of the behavioral studies carried out on them. Motion-detecting cameras, tagging, as well as DNA analysis, showed that besides the excellent swimming skills of these wolves, there were other distinctive features separating them from the inner population of wolves.
