Into to Team Cherry
Team Cherry is a small independent game development studio based in Adelaide, Australia, best known for creating the critically acclaimed game Hollow Knight. Founded by developers Ari Gibson and William Pellen, the team started out working on game jams and shared a passion for building imaginative, exploration-driven worlds. Despite being a very small team—originally just a few core members—they handled nearly every aspect of development themselves, including design, art, and gameplay systems. Gibson focused on the game’s distinctive hand-drawn art and animation, while Pellen worked on mechanics, enemies, and overall game design. Their collaborative approach resulted in a richly detailed underground kingdom filled with challenging combat and atmospheric storytelling. Released in 2017, Hollow Knight became a major success, praised for its music, worldbuilding, and difficulty, and went on to sell millions of copies worldwide. The studio supported the game with multiple free content expansions and later developed a sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, continuing their focus on deep exploration and intricate design. Overall, Team Cherry is widely admired for showing how a small, passionate indie team can create a game that rivals much larger studios in quality, creativity, and impact.
