Power supplies are used to provide power for your device this can be in the form of a large power brick on a device such as laptops and mobile devices, they can be found either plugged into the wall or along the cable in a form of a brick or in a desktop PC they can be found near the rear of the desktop as a black or white box with a power switch and a connector to plug it into a wall socket.

80 Plus Ratings on desktops

The 80 Plus rating represents the power efficiency underload ranging from white to ruby ratings with white being the most inefficent at 80% efficiency and ruby being the most efficent at approximately 96.5%. The ratings are White/Standard (80%), Bronze (82-85%), Silver (85-88%), Gold (87-90%), Platinum (90-92%), Titanium (90-94%) and Ruby (96.5%~). The best balance of all of them would be the 80 Plus Gold rating as it is ideal for performance and cost. The 80 Plus rating doesn't show quality and it only shows efficiency at which AC power is converted to DC.
