Schindler’s List, directed by Steven Spielberg, is regarded by critics as one of the most historically accurate depictions of a historical event ever put to screen. The movie serves as a mostly non-fiction biography for the Nazi businessman Oskar Schindler(Liam Neeson) at the time of the Holocaust. We follow Oskar as he works on building up his factory for equipment where he only hires jews as a form of extra income. Through the course of the film, we witness Oskar Schindler go through a moral transformation from witnessing first hand, the treatment the Jews received from the Nazis through real characters like Nazi commandant Amon Goeth(Ralph Finnes) and Jewish people like Itzhak Stern(Ben Kingsley). Schindler’s List is generally praised as Spielberg's best work out of the many movies like: Jaws, E.T and Jurassic Park, which he has created. Schindler’s List has been confirmed by many Holocaust survivors that certain events from the film like the Krakow Ghetto and Auschwitz were very accurate to what they’d seen from their experience. Schindler’s List is also praised for its portrayal of Jewish culture and life during the holocaust, as well as its unusual decision at the time to film the movie in black and white, which very positively impacted the overall tone of the movie. Schindler’s List is a heartbreaking and accurate portrayal of the Holocaust, accompanied by an inspiring true story of redemption.
Forrest Gump, directed by Robert Zemeckis, is a truly inspiring movie about life. The basic plot of Forrest Gump is that we follow the perspective of an intellectually challenged boy named Forrest Gump(Tom Hanks), letting the experiences in his life happen. The story of Forrest Gump takes place between the 50s and 70s and is highly praised for its representation of pop culture and social ideology at the time. Forrest Gump is a fascinating story about letting life take you anywhere as well as taking opportunities that are offered to you, which can be truly life changing; this is demonstrated several times throughout the movie. Forrest Gump is one of the most masterfully crafted characters put to screen for his lack of intelligence which allows the film to flow smoothly, without internal conflict, thus driving the movie's biggest theme of living your life. Forrest Gump is a unique blend of many genres that all come together to create a magical story.
The Shawshank Redemption, based on the Stephen King story and directed by Frank Darbont, is the highest rated movie on IMDB, which is the most well accepted movie rating website. The plot follows a distraught, drunk, banker, Andy Dufresne(Tim Robbins), in the late 40s, who is accused and found guilty on two counts of first degree murder towards his wife and her lover and is thus sent to Shawshank Penitentiary. Andy is left to find his way around prison and get used to the prison life over the course of several years. Andy meets a fellow inmate called Red(Morgan Freeman). Through loopholes, Andy is able to live a secure and respected life in prison by taking advantage of the staff's finance problems and laundering their money using his elite banking skills. The Shawshank Redemption is narrated by Red, Morgan Freeman’s best performance which is what the movie is most famous for. The themes of the movie revolves hope, where in the darkest and most hopeless scenarios, there is always a brighter outcome; as well as friendship and the trust it’s built on. Another theme which the movie tackles is industrialization, shown through the memorable character Brooks. The Shawshank Redemption is an outstanding movie that tackles deep and important themes, has memorable characters, deep film language and golden acting which will definitely be worth watching.
