Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Stikes Back(1980)

The Empire Strikes Back is the sequel to the original Star Wars in 1977 and is usually labelled as the best Star Wars movie for various story-telling reasons. Directed by Irvin Kershner, The Empire Strikes Back follows our heroes: Luke(Mark Hamill), Han(Harrison Ford) and Leia(Casrrie Fisher) with the rebel alliance, having to escape the clutches of the Empire, led by Darth Vader(David Prowse, James Earl Jones), on his quest to kill Luke or turn him to the dark side of the force. The Empire Strikes Back is most well known for its game-changing plot twist that is considered by many critics to be the best plot twists of all time. The film is great at balancing high stakes action and drama with witty comedy and cheesy romance, being one of the most effective movies at balancing genres. The Empire Strikes Back is an outstanding story in a fascinating universe with memorable characters, an engaging plot and a terrifying antagonist.

Interstellar(2014)

Interstellar is considered a masterpiece in drama, visual effects and storytelling when it comes to modern day movies. Christopher Nolan's Interstellar tackles themes of unconditional love that transcends space and time, the fate of humanity and supernatural events. Interstellar follows ex NASA pilot Joseph Cooper(Matthew McConaughey) who, along with his daughter Murph(MacKenzie Foy, Jessica Chastain, Ellen Burstyn) discovers a mission by NASA to find a new home for the dying Earth, led by professor Brand(Michael Caine). Cooper is given the hard task to leave his home behind to save humanity and find a new home for them, along with the professor's daughter, Amelia(Anne Hathaway), whilst the terrifying effects of time begin to take effect whilst in the far distances of space. Interstellar is very highly praised for its incredible usage of CGI and practical effects, such as the black hole, which many physicists have said is very scientifically accurate. Pair that with an exceptional score from Hans Zimmer, and you get a fascinating and stressful space adventure that is a modern staple in cinema today.


Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Terminator 2: Judgement Day(1991)

As the sequel to the original terminator in 1984, terminator 2 was a complete success for so many reasons. Directed by James Cameron, Terminator 2: Judgement Day follows a very similar plot than the original, a time travelling robot, the T-1000(Roberty Patrick), from the future attempts to end the life of a boy named John Connor(Edward Flurong) who will lead a revelation against the robots in the future. This time there is another time traveling Robot who protects John Connor, which happens to be a reprogrammed version of the robot in the first movie, the T-800(Arnold Schwarzenegger). Terminator 2: Judgement Day is filled with amazing practical effects such as the motorbike chase, which was impressive in the early 90s. Terminator 2: Judgement Day is a historic sci-fi/action movie that went beyond what the original terminator did in almost every other way, and is the pinnacle of James Cameron's work.


2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey(1968)

Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, is widely considered the Godfather of science fiction movies. This movie is highly praised for its stunning and ahead of its time visual effects that still hold up very well today. 2001: A Space Odyssey tackles themes of human evolution, space exploration, technological advancements and the significance of our existence. The plot of the movie begins at the dawn of man, and jumps cuts millions of years into the future with one of the best cuts ever put to screen, where the technologically advanced humans of 2001 who have colonised the moon and the space around Earth approve a mission to investigate a mysterious monolith that leads them to Jupiter. We then follow a group of astronauts led by Dave Bowman(Kier Duella) travelling to Jupiter along with the technological masterpiece of the HAL-9000 computer(Douglas Rain). 2001: A Space Odyssey is also well praised for its memorable soundtrack by Georgi Ligetti. The film is also highly praised for its stunning visual effects for 1968, before the moon landing, by using miniature props and complex colour palettes. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a historic movie that pioneered the formula for Sci-Fi movies to come and is a unique movie that is sure to wow you.
